The Giver Blogpost #4

How does chapters 16 ~ 18 relate to the themes of freedom and choice?

(The Quote)
" Gabriel's breathing was even and deep. Jonas liked having him there, though he felt guilty about the secret. Each night he gave memories to Gabriel: memories of boat rides and picnics in the sun; memories of soft rainfall against windowpanes; memories of dancing bare-footed on a damp lawn.

From this quote and chapters 16-18, I can see that Jonas want to have all these great times from his memories. Maybe it's just because I know that this is just a story, but, I think that Jonas a bit over reacted with how he suddenly loved Gabriel so much in that chapters. This is really confusing for me because, I discovered two completely different reasons on why he might did that. Number one is; he might love Gabriel so much because he just realized how families interact with each other as the pleasant family memory from the giver. Jonas saw families with grandparents, he didn't even know what they are part in the family. The important part is that people spread love. Could he be thinking that gabriel is really cute now? He saw children playing around so happily in his memory, he might be starting growing up now and see how silly, cute and funny kids are with his feelings he have. It made him care about Gabriel, he can't wait how his little brother will grow up like, that's why he wanted to teach him best.

My other opinion is that Jonas somehow secretly want Gabriel to be the future person who will experience freedom! Although, when he talks to the giver, he gets so convinced and aware that choices and freedom can a bit scary to control as in chapter 9 where he said "What if they chose wrong?" My main point is why he said "There could be love" to Gabriel? What does he mean by that? It made me wonder how Jonas is actually thinking about the community's future later then. Between the transition from what he talked about with the giver is extremely opposite of what I think he's thinking about. Most likely for me is that he is thinking that Gabriel would have to be the person to spread FREEDOM! And I can say from now on that Jonas is really having a difficult time choosing wether something is good or bad for him and his society.
